2007: The Year of Watching DVDs, Part III

Yeah, I know SUPERBLOG!! has been really slacking off lately (I mean, really) and I'll address that, and what you can do to help, tomorrow.

Anyway. Continuing where we left off last week:

  • The Manchurian Candidate (1962): Pretty good. Here's a thought: Has Janet Leigh ever played anything other than a deranged slut?
  • The Treasure of the Sierra Madre: Okay.
  • Toy Story: Okay.
  • Monsters, Inc.: Cute and fun.
  • The Gold Rush (1925): I watched it with the annoying 1942 narration but otherwise it's fine.
  • Finding Nemo: I hate anthropomorphism and I hate undersea adventures but I have to admit it was nicely done.
  • Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit: Amusing.
  • City Lights: Really spoke to me.
  • Midnight Cowboy (repeat): Goodish. Slight story.
  • The Great Dictator: Ballsy.
  • Metropolis (1927): Impressive.
  • Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (repeat): Better this time. Inferior to the manga, but for what it is, it's Good.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl: Okay. Too many explosions and shit.
  • The Princess Bride: Weird, but not as weird as its presence on the 250 list.
  • Cape Fear (1991): Exciting.
  • Cool Hand Luke: Good.
  • Oldboy: Impressive-looking and captivating. Also seriously confused and ridiculous.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest: I liked it, except for the fucking cliffhanger ending. I hate it when the second movie in a series turns out to be just a setup for the third. (See also: Back to the Future, The Matrix.)

Twofifty update: 149.

Total Michael Keaton grade: 53 out of 90, giving us an average of 2.94. Hmm. That's not good. Better luck next week.

Midnight Cowboy only goodish?

Yeah, fine actors (esp. Hoffman), interesting character study, underdeveloped plot, not a big fan of the psychedelic touches.

Hoffman's good but Jon Voight is my hero any day of the week. And he's got one hell of a boner.

I guess LIFE AQUATIC is excused too? :-)

I really don't think that BACK TO THE FUTURE 2 is "just a setup" for BACK TO THE FUTURE 3. To be honest, I remember those two movies as quite different and that the link between them was a very small part, compared to the "real" content.

Nice pic, Spidey.

Life Aquatic is probably my least favorite Wes Anderson film.

The link between Future 2 and 3 is exactly the same size as the link between Matrix 2 and 3, and between Pirates 2 and 3. So there.

I just put # Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind on my netflix cue. I saw that once as a kid and it blew my mind. I don't remember much of it now , except I think there's a giant locust in it?

Dead Man's Chest is also way too long. 2 hours and 40 minutes for a cliffhanger ending? Yeesh.

Generally I agree but in this case I was okay with it cos I watched it drunk.
